Timaya’s debut album “True Story” is regarded as one of the best-selling albums (physical copies) in Nigeria ever.
It was released in 2007 to positive reviews and unprecedented commercial success.
Prior to the release in 2007, Timaya had gained national recognition with his first hit, “Dem Mama” released about two years before the album.
It was, in fact, the success of the lead single that led him to record more songs for the album.
The album wasn’t just a best-seller, it was also filled with bangers. Singles off “True Story,” including the title track “True Story“, “Ogologoma” and “Dem Mama” shot Timaya straight to stardom.
He would later go on to win Album of the Year and Best Reggae/Dancehall Album in 2008.
Born Inetimi Timaya Odon, the 40-year-old superstar is part of a generation of artists that took the dancehall genre to the mainstream in Nigeria.
Timaya is also one of the most successful, richest, and most influential musicians of his time.
He released his last album, “Chulo Vibes” in 2019, and even after fifteen years, Timaya still continues to make hits.
