The Track and Field events officially kicked off at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Friday, July 30, 2021. Grace Nwokocha and Blessing Okagbare both started the quest for Nigeria at the Women’s 100 meters in Heat 5 and 6, respectively.
Nwokocha qualifies for the semi-final with a personal best time of 11 seconds while Okagbare was also outstanding in her heat, qualifying for the semi-final with 11.04 seconds.
It’s been a rough week for Nigeria Athletes at the Games after ten contingents were banned from competing by the Athletics Integrity Unit. This decision was an enormous blow for Nigeria, as the chances of winning a medal at the Athletics events became harder.
Blessing Okagbare blamed the Athletics Federation of Nigeria when she took to her official Twitter account on Thursday, July 29th,2021. She believes negligence by the officials was the reason the contingents would not take part in the competition.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria is a body governing the sports of Athletics in Nigeria. It is a member of the Confederation of African Athletics and the International Association of Athletics Federations.
